The long way home
Exhibition, 2019
ITO Raum, Stuttgart
A gentle wind blows over the delicate leaves as the moon combs slowly through the night. The 3-legged grandpa and enigmatic grandma speak softly to each other and the others stand still or lean, listening to their stories. They speak of things that remind you of home. Home is one thing and also many things. Home is near and also far away. And as time breathed calmly into her ear like the ocean, she stood there, observing, reflecting and longing. She was on the long way home.
The Australian-Korean artist Shirley Cho reflects on her very personal family history in the installation, “The long way home”, which was specially conceived for the ITO space. Childhood memories and questions of identity and home are carefully considered through various materials such as clay, paper, fabrics, glass, silver leaf, moss, bamboo and bronze. By working together with the space, the relationship between the objects play an important role in this intimate installation.
