ITO Artist Residency & Exhibition, 2021

Langenbachhof, Black Forest

102 Erdberge, 2021

stoneware, variable dimensions

installation view, Langenbachhof

One evening at the ITO artist residency funded by Stiftung Kunstfonds (2021), we were served a plate of local strawberries (Erdbeeren). The form of the strawberries together reminded me of a mountain landscape. I remembered hearing that in the Black Forest, there are 102 mountains over the height of 1000 metres, several of which I have climbed. In reference to my own personal experience at Langenbachhof and to these 102 mountains, “strawberry mountains”, Erdberge, were formed from clay and spread around the Langenbachhof space for visitors to discover.

Moonstone, 2021

silver leaf, stone, moss, variable dimensions

installation view, Langenbachhof

This installation was worked into the surrounding nature of Langenbachhof as part of the exhibition following the ITO artist residency (2021). The work continues to exist in the hillside behind Langenbachhof, exposed to the changing seasons, transforming and becoming part of the landscape.

The Golden Tooth, 2021

gold leaf on shingle roof, variable dimensions

installation view, Langenbachhof

I am always interested in working with architectural details on site. Here at Langenbachhof, I was particularly impressed with the traditional old shingle roof. Looking at this “toothed” roof reminded me of an old Korean tradition I Iearned as a child when my tooth fell out. In Korean folklore, if you throw your baby tooth onto the roof of the house, it is believed that a magpie will bring you good fortune with a strong new tooth.
